Just wondering how many "pro's" we have eyeballing this forum.
I know that when I posted a Super 8 question on cinematography.com, I was surprised that quite a few of the professional DP's on there, who shoot 35mm features, etc., had shot Super 8, and all of them liked it.

Hey Matt!
When I was living in Las Vegas, I worked for an indie filmmaker by the name of Ray D. Steckler. He mainly shot 16mm but had two really nice Arri IIc setups. I asked him if I could help in on a shoot and he agreed to let me run camera with one of them. We shot EXR stock and.....oh my god....I loved it! The camera itself was noisy as hell but the images came out prestine. I'd love to do it again.

Oh, sure. I've shot 35mm at speeds ranging from single frame for stop motion up to several hundred frames per second for miniature demolition work. Lots of commercials in between. It's fun to shoot.

Roger, what cameras did you shoot on, and what differences are there on the pro 35mm cameras.
I mean, if someone was stupid enough to hire me to shoot some 35mm, what should I know, in order to fake my way through the shoot?

Hey Matt,
I've directed commercials in 35mm..but didn't run the camera...you can do what friends of mine did..rent a 35mm camera and shoot some stuff(not cheap)there are places that have like 2 day workshops on 35mm production(Indie Slate...www.FilmWorkshops.com..etc)..ask Nigel he shoots alot of 35mm..I'd say go for it...just don't forget us tadpoles when your a bigtime feature director

Hey Matt,

I've shot three features, commercials and short films on 35mm. It's great to work with such a large negative.

The funny thing is when I was looking for shooting jobs before I've shot a lot of 35mm and people would see reel and say hey that 16mm commercial looks like 35mm, but then they'd ask how much 35mm I'd shot. I would say a little and they'd look concerned. What they didn't seem to understand is that if I could make 16mm look like 35mm, what could I make 35mm look like.

It's easy to make good images (not great, because that does take skill) on 35mm. You're really working when you can make 16mm or even Super-8 look great because you're working with a much smaller negative.

Yeah, I've though about renting a camera & shooting some tests.
Mighty expensive.
Impossible for me to afford now.

I would think the killer, would be the insurance.
Do they make you leave your wife as collateral when you check out one of these beasts?

Have you looked at any of the Russian cameras on Ebay like the Konvas? Some of them might be a bit old but there extremely inexpensive and can come with a lot of extra stuff.Infact,a lot of them are cheaper then some S-8's...LOL!

The Konvas cameras are beautiful machines. I know a guy here in Houston that has one and they're built like a tank. Really nice craftsmanship, if not overbuilt and a little heavy. 20 years from now they'll still be running. In all, though, quite a bargain.
